A Simple Guide to Revamping Your Patio

A patio renovation can boost your home value and help you get more enjoyment out of your yard. However, it can be just as big of a process as building a new patio. Revamping your patio involves detailed planning, careful material choice, and quality installation to ensure lasting results.

While much of our work is designing and installing new custom patios, we do get clients asking us to repair or upgrade older patios. We love helping clients restore and transform existing patios into the tranquil oasis they’ve always dreamed of.

In this guide, we’ll go over the steps to revamping your patio to ensure the end result is one you love and can enjoy for decades to come.

Why Should You Renovate and Revamp Your Patio?

Benefits of upgrading and revamping your patio space include:

  • Increase Home Value: A thoughtfully designed and installed patio constructed from quality materials can boost your home’s curb appeal and market value.
  • Increased Usable Space and Function: Patios can significantly increase how much time you can comfortably spend in your yard. A covered patio can protect you against drizzling rain, soaring temps, and other elements. This protection can make the difference between an afternoon stuck inside or a day enjoying your yard.
  • Improved Aesthetics: A sleek, well-designed patio constructed from quality materials can enhance the entire appearance of your property.
  • Enhanced Longevity: Revamping your patio using quality, durable materials can help it withstand wear and tear and last longer.
  • Structural Improvements and Increased Safety: Renovating your patio can enhance structural stability, resulting in a safer space for you and your family to enjoy.
  • Reduced Maintenance: Patios constructed with weather-resistant, durable materials can reduce maintenance.

Key Considerations and Planning Before you Start Renovating your Patio Space

1. Get Planning

The first step in a patio revamp is evaluating your existing space and patio. Here’s a brief questionnaire to help you identify areas to focus on:

  • Do any structural components need to be replaced? Patios undergo immense wear and tear over the years, with constant exposure to the elements. Are pavers or decking showing signs of wear or cracks? Are certain parts faded?
  • How do I want to use the space? Will it be for relaxing? A poolside space for lounging? A space for entertaining guests and cooking? Perhaps it will be a mix of uses.
  • What strengths does my patio have in terms of layout, space, and usage? What areas need improvements? This could be more shade needed, more space for hanging out, a better outdoor kitchen, etc.
  • What is my budget for materials, labour, furnishings, lighting, and unexpected expenses?
  • What features do I want to keep or add? How will my furniture, plants, decor, and any other features fit into the new space/layout?
  • What council approval do I need to obtain before getting started?
  • Is the current drainage sufficient or do I need excavation/grading work completed to prevent water pooling?
  • Do I want additional privacy?

2. Decide on a Design and Layout

Once you’ve planned out the space, which components need to be replaced, and how you plan to use your patio, it’s design time!

Determine if you want a modern, sleek look, a rustic appearance, tropical vibes, or architecture that complements your home.

One of the biggest 2025 patio trends in Australia that we’re seeing is modern, flat-style patios. The clean lines of flat patios are sleek, contemporary, and timeless.

We’re also seeing a preference for soft, natural shapes, such as dome and curved patios

Very professional since the first time I've called them! The job was excellent and super fast! It took them 2 days to take down the old patio and put the new one on once all the materials were delivered! The workers were friendly.

Choosing the Right Patio Material

We find that many clients hyper-focus on how a certain material will look. This is understandable, as aesthetics are a key consideration. While appearance is crucial, choosing the right patio materials is equally important. Your chosen patio materials will affect the function, cost, and longevity of your patio.

It’s important to research the materials closely, considering their quality, expected lifespan, required maintenance, and cost.  The right material choices can make your patio last longer, make it easier to maintain, and help it suit your usage preferences and lifestyle.

We’ve carefully chosen every material in our product range, ensuring we offer the highest quality products at cost-effective prices. We only supply and install materials that are manufactured to handle Perth’s roasting temperatures, heavy rainfall, and high UV rays.

When choosing patio materials, we recommend:

  • Opting for materials that are suited to your location and climate to help prevent warping, cracking, fading, moulding, and corroding. For Perth, we recommend materials that are salt and rust resistant due to our windy conditions, frequent rainfall, and salty coastal air
  • Choosing furniture specifically made for outdoor use, with water-resistant and fade-resistant qualities
  • Opt for glossy finishes when possible as they are typically more durable and easier to clean
  • Consider which flooring type will suit your patio best. Timber decking is a classic choice but requires regular staining and maintenance. Pavers are versatile and durable but plan to keep up with weeds sprouting in the cracks. Composite decking or concrete can be durable options but are often on the pricier side.
  • Choose quality roofing materials as this is the aspect of your patio that will be subjected to the worst of the elements. We often recommend the Fielders C-Dek for its sleek appearance, low maintenance requirements, and impressive durability.

We also highly recommend Bondor SolarSpan®, an Australian-made option that is ideal for flat patio or low-pitch roofs. With high thermal efficiency, SolarSpan has been a top choice of ours for years.

Ideas for Furnishing, Plants, and Other Finishing Touches for Your Updated Patio

As you plan and dream of your renovated patio, here are our top furnishing, plants, and finishing touches to keep in mind:

  • Outdoor Kitchen: Outdoor kitchens are an ideal feature for entertaining friends and family and enjoying your backyard more. Including an outdoor kitchen is an ideal addition to your patio revamp if you love hosting gatherings and cooking outside. • Varied Seating: Plan to incorporate space for a variety of seating options in your patio revamp. We recommend a mix of outdoor, multi-purpose furniture, such as built-in seating, plush chairs, benches, dining seats, and outdoor couches.
  • Water Features: A small fountain, pond, pool, or hot tub are all great companions to a revamped patio. We love how these clients made their pool a focal point surrounded by custom patios: 5 Poolside Patio Ideas and Examples from Our Work.
  • Lighting: Lighting sometimes gets left out in the planning process, but make sure to incorporate a variety of lighting solutions. We often recommend including a variety of options to achieve the ideal blend of ambiance and function. Consider a mix of path lighting, solar lights, pendant lights, string lights, and plug-in lights.
  • Shade: How much shade do you want in your patio and how do you plan to achieve it? For portable, cost-effective shade, an umbrella may suffice. For the sturdiest option and most protection from the elements, consider adding a roof or retractable awnings.
  • Smart Tech Upgrades: Adding smart features can elevate your new patio even further and add valuable function. Consider outdoor speakers, automated lighting with smart bulbs, and irrigation systems.
  • Heating: Most of the time a heat source is far from our minds in Perth. However, on chilly nights, an electric or gas patio heater is incredibly cosy.
  • Plants and Greenery: Plants and greenery are one of the most cost-effective ways to create an inviting, calming atmosphere for a patio. Add Native Australian plants, drought-resistant plants (succulents), climbing plants, and potted edible plants (herbs, tomatoes, etc).

When to Get your Patio Renovation Done

Renovating a patio in Australia requires careful planning around our seasonal windows. This ensures the smoothest building process, best outcome, and longest lasting results.

For Perth, we typically recommend planning patio renovations for autumn or early spring. The mild temperatures during these times allow for optimal construction conditions.

Here’s a breakdown of ideal patio renovation times, from least favourable to most favourable:

  • Summer: Not recommended as it is tough to get plants/landscaping established in the scorching heat. We suggest getting your patio completed in spring so you can spend the summer months in the comfortable shade of your renovated patio!
  • Winter: Perth’s winter/wet season, mostly June to August, does not lend itself to good patio construction conditions. The storms, frequent rain, and often waterlogged soil are best avoided.
  • Early Autumn: Excellent time for patio renovations due to cooler air and warm soil
  • Spring: Usually an ideal for most patio projects and establishing plants/landscaping before the harsh heat of summer

We also recommend contacting your chosen patio contractor ahead of time. This allows for ample planning time and ensures you get on the schedule.
